This blog post should have probably been written in the beginning because it's such a VITAL part of a witches craft.

What is A Book of Shadows

A book of shadows is the personal diary of a witch, it's a collection of magickal thoughts and revelations about life and magick, spells, rituals, ingredients or correspondences that is vital to a witches magickal craft. Truly the Witches Book of Shadows is key to the Witches spiritual growth.

Really there is no right or wrong way to make a book of shadows, usually though it consists of several key elements.

What Goes into a Book of Shadows?
  • Book dedication
  • Table of Contents
  • Invocations to God & Goddess
  • Sabbat or Holiday rituals
  • Spells
  • Herbal lore and properties
  • Stone properties
  • Healing information
  • Meditations and Journey work outlines and diary of what happens.
  • Magickal revelations and inspiration
  • Spell results; it's best to keep track of the spells you cast and the outcomes so you know what works and what doesn't.
  • Anything else you find inspiring.

Truly the only requirement for your book of shadows is that it reflect the type of witch you are!

This question comes from Alex.

“I read your blog weekly and I see you talk sometimes about Shamanism. I am curious how shamanism and magick are alike? I mean really how can you consider them them the same?”— Alex

What a good question Alex! I have been meaning to write a post that talks about Shamanism & magick.

Shamanism has been around since the dawn of time. It's the first religious practice ever to be recorded by man. Long before the bible or Christianity.

What is Shamanism:

Shamanism is a practice where a practitioner goes into an altered state of consciousness to connect with helping spirits to gain knowledge and bring back healing for either the practitioner themselves or the client.
Shamans work closely with animal guides; also known as Totem animals. Shamans also work intimately with the planet; they spent time in nature, connect deeply with the spirit of nature & it's various devas and spirits.

Shamans can use a variety of tools for their work including but not limited too:

  • crystals
  • animal bones and fur
  • plant teachers
  • drums
  • rattles
  • candles
  • incense

What is Witchcraft?

First lets define magick:

Magick is the art of creating change in accordance to ones will.
This can take form by a witch doing a ritual or spell or even going into the spirit world to do magick.

I've talked about the magickal practices of witches in other blog posts such as:

The Little known Goals of a Witch
Learned or Heredity Witchcraft
Wicca? Witchcraft? What's The Difference?
What is the difference between magic & magick?
What is a Witch?

How are they alike?

They both involve going into an altered state to retrieve power and energy to effect change in this world.

They both work closely with helping spirits.

They both use tools such as; crystals, herbs, rattles, wands, drums, etc.

Both their primary purposes is to connect the practitioner to the energy of the earth around them.

Really it's my opinion that shamanism and witchcraft are the same thing. Shamanism is the oldest version of witchcraft.

I hope this has helped you distinguish between the two and see their similarities.

Peaceful House Potion

This potion is going to be used to help keep peaceful energies around the house; you can anoint thresholds (magickal places indeed), door knobs, put it in a spritz bottle and spray it in the air as a mist. Use this before difficult discussions that may spark arguments or after a fight.

**please note that you must have a special spoon, cooking pot, and strainer for this potion- this has to be a separate one from everyday culinary use!**

Items Needed
  • A bottle (glass is preferred, you can get a canning jar at a local craft store for under $5.00)
  • 1& 1/2 cups Spring Water
  • apple cider vinegar or vodka about 1/2 cup*you only need one*
  • Lavender herb(handful 1/4 cup) or essential oil (10-20 drops)
  • Lemon Verbena herb (handful 1/4 cup) or oil (10-20 drops)
  • Sage Leaves (handful 1/4 cup) or oil (5-10drops)
  • 2 whole Star Anise
  • 1 whole cinnamon stick
  • pot used exclusively for making potions (you can get one cheap at a consignment shop or thrift store- I got mine for .90 cents)
  • A wooden spoon you use exclusively for potion making.
  • Stove or Camp fire. (wood and matches if you choose to make a fire outside)
  • Strainer used exclusively for magick.

Timing: The timing for making this potion should be new to full moon.
Prepare yourself as you see fit before hand (this could include a ritual bath with salt or smudging yourself with burning sage or smokeless sage spray.) Prepare your space by getting the cooking pot, spoon and measured water. Add the water into the sauce pan and add in the herbs or oils bring the mixture to a rolling boil then turn down the heat to a low simmer. Stirring the potion in a clockwise manner chant the following several times:

Water & herbs mixed; a potion is formed
Bad energy & anger will be transformed
Peace & tranquility creates a powerful brew
Restoring my home anew.

When you feel this potion is complete (about 30 minutes on a low simmer) strain the mixture into the jar let it cool a bit and then add in the vodka or apple cider vinegar. This potion should last for 30 days if not longer, keep it in a dark cool place, out of direct sunlight. Be sure to make sure you are not allergic to any of the items because they will come in contact with your skin. You can do a test patch in a small hidden spot on your body to make sure there is no reaction before using this product around the house- this is not a BATH and should not be used as such it's just meant as a wash.  Washes are a popular practice in the magickal practice of hoodoo.

There are so many factors that can go into spell casting; color, planets, the tides, etc. The time of day hold specific meaning and power to our magick as well. What follows is my correspondences for the times of day in magick.

Time of day in Magick:

Dawn: awakening, beginnings, inspiration.

Noon: power, strength, willpower, pinnacle.

Twilight: diminishing, endings, changes, banishing.

Midnight: endings, releasing, witching hour, connection to the spirit realm.

Use this magickal blend to help get rid of the nasties that may be inhabiting your space!

Ingredients
  • Frankincense
  • Sandalwood
  • Sage
  • A pinch of salt
  • a black tourmaline stone or chip.
These ingredients when mixed together will bring about a total shift in the atmosphere of a place! Mix the ingredients together adding the crystal last. Hold the black tourmaline crystal in your hand seeing it as a vacuum cleaner meant to suck up all the nasty energy all around you. The tourmaline is not meant to be burnt on a charcoal block but used to empower the mixture!
